Workshop with Helena Kallner: Working with eating disorders: a somatic approach. An introduction to Developmental Somatic Psychotherapy™ -Ruella Frank

In this workshop we will explore how integrating body and movement within Gestalt therapy illuminates relational and existential dynamics, and how a somatic perspective deepens our understanding of eating disorders.

In eating disorders, strict bodily control can be an attempt to create a background of personal- and interpersonal stability. This may provide a sense of agency and certainty. However, the capacity to feel oneself in relation to others – to kinesthetically resonate with the situation – becomes diminished.

Participants will be invited to explore themselves through movement and in relation to others, discovering a felt sense of their lived body – which is different from the observing and evaluating stance (body-as-object) that often characterizes the eating disorder process. This exploration highlights the importance of feeling ourselves with our clients and thereby opening a pathway for them to inhabit their body more fully.

The workshop introduces Developmental Somatic Psychotherapy, founded by Ruella Frank, and draws on findings from Helena Kallner’s PhD thesis; Forming form: How movement shapes psychotherapists’ practical knowledge. Participants will engage in this approach, which emphasizes movement as the root of experience, language, and knowing, and teaches practitioners to cultivate their bodily awareness and practical knowledge.
